Our Work
Initiatives
A statewide initiative launched by the California Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being to promote the connection between physical activity and mental wellness. The campaign encourages Californians of all ages to embrace movement, mindfulness, and play as essential tools for improving both physical and mental health.
CDC State Physical Activity and Nutrition
The State Physical Activity and Nutrition program is Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded initiative that supports California’s efforts to improve nutrition and physical activity through sustainable, equity-centered strategies:
- Promoting nutrition security through healthy food access and procurement policies.
- Increasing safe, inclusive opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities.
- Supporting breastfeeding-friendly environments and continuity of care.
- Strengthening early care and education settings to support lifelong healthy habits.
Ultra Processed Foods
The Real Food Healthy Kids Act (Assembly Bill 1264), signed into California law on October 8, 2025, is a landmark piece of legislation aimed at phasing out ultra-processed foods (UPFs) from school meals across the state. It is the first law in the United States to legally define UPFs and restrict their presence in school food environments.
Youth Sports
The Youth Sports for All Act (Assembly Bill 749), signed into California law on October 13, 2025, is a forward-looking initiative aimed at expanding access to youth sports across the state. The legislation lays the groundwork for evaluating the creation of a California Department of Youth Sports, with the goal of improving health, equity, and developmental outcomes for children and adolescents. It also established the Youth Sports Blue Ribbon Commission Fund, which will support research and planning efforts to ensure California becomes a national leader in inclusive and accessible youth athletic programs.
California’s implementation of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) program was designed to empower low-income individuals and families to make healthier food and lifestyle choices. Through a combination of direct education and policy, systems, and environmental strategies, CalFresh Healthy Living has created healthier communities across the state. Although federal funding for SNAP-Ed ended in 2025 due to Public Law 119-21, the legacy of this program continues to inform and support initiatives to promote nutrition equity and reduce chronic disease.
