Research and Evaluation

For decades, the Research and Evaluation team has played a pivotal role in advancing public health nutrition in California, most notably through its leadership in evaluating CalFresh Healthy Living initiatives. This legacy includes statewide and local evaluation systems, technical assistance for local health departments, and research on nutrition, physical activity, and chronic disease prevention among low-income populations.

T
he team continues to build on this foundation with future initiatives by:

  • Supporting equity-driven evaluation strategies across emerging public health initiatives.
  • Strengthening data systems that inform policy, practice, and community engagement.
  • Preserving and sharing legacy evaluation tools and findings to guide future programming.
  • Collaborating with partners to evaluate community voices in research and evaluation.

Our Research and Evaluation team remains committed to translating evidence into action, ensuring that California's public health strategies are informed, inclusive, and impactful.

Collaboration & Impact

The Nutrition Policy Institute (NPI), part of UC Agriculture & Natural Resources, led evaluation for CalFresh Healthy Living (California's SNAP-Ed). NPI continues to partner with CDPH and local implementers to assess reach, quality, and impact, and strengthens the evidence behind policy, systems, and environmental strategies that promote healthy eating and active living statewide.
