Thalassemias

Thalassemias are a group of disorders which have in common the inability to produce sufficient quantities of globin chains necessary for hemoglobin synthesis. In addition to sickle beta thalassemia, the Newborn Screening Program identifies Beta0 thalassemia major (no adult hemoglobin is produced), E/Beta thalassemia, C/Beta thalassemia, D/Beta thalassemia, alpha thalassemia major, Hb H disease, and Hb H-Constant Spring disease.
