Test Methodology

Pyrosequencing (PSQ) or AccuProbe (AP) or High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for M. tuberculosis complex.  Pyrazinamide (PZA) susceptibility testing using Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) for M. tb (susceptible).  PZA resistance could be M. bovis or mono-resistant TB.  A combination of growth characteristics and biochemicals separates M. tb, and M. bovis (includes BCG).  High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) definitively identifies  M. bovis BCG vaccine strain.

Turnaround Time

1 to 2 weeks

Interferences & Limitations

Bacterial and/or fungal contaminants can interfere with the identification process.

Additional Information

Identification of Mycobacterium bovis is encouraged because the epidemiology is different from that of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
