Acceptable Sample/Specimen Type for Testing
Pure cultures on liquid or solid medium. M.tb complex only.
Minimum Volume Required
Liquid medium: 1 ml with visible biomass. Solid medium culture: visible growth after at least two weeks incubation.

Ship as infectious substance. Pre-submit Excel or TBGIMS submittal form.
Spacer oligonucleotide typing (“spoligotyping”) and MIRU/VNTR (mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units/variable number of tandem repeats). RFLP on request from tuberculosis control programs for strains that match by spoligotyping and MIRU/VNTR.
Spoligo/MIRU 2 to 3 weeks, RFLP an additional 4 weeks. More rapid turnaround may be possible in exceptional circumstances.
Interferences & Limitations
Unable to obtain results if culture mixed with another mycobacteria or with bacterial and/or fungal contaminants.
