Implementing Comprehensive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) Programs
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Network for a Healthy California (Network) is pleased to release a funding opportunity for local health departments (LHD) to implement comprehensive SNAP-Ed programs.
LHDs will serve as the lead health agency in their respective jurisdictions. They will coordinate with local partners and involve multiple sectors in spearheading efforts to improve the nutritional status and prevent obesity among California's low-income population in accordance with the USDA's SNAP-Ed FFY 2013 Guidance.
This funding opportunity is being done as a result of CDPH's planning process to maximize the health impact for low-income populations. Besides individual and group nutrition education, allowable uses of funding include; "comprehensive, multi-level interventions at multiple complementary organizational and institutional levels; and community and public health approaches to improve nutrition." A comprehensive approach is needed to reverse the obesity epidemic and reduce health disparities for California's vulnerable populations.
$30.25 million has been set aside for this purpose. Funding allocations are population based (i.e., number of SNAP-Ed eligible population at or below 185% of FPL). Small, medium and large counties, totaling 44 LHDs, will be funded with a grant term of October 1, 2012 through September 30, 2016. Very small counties are expected to receive funding in FFY 2014. These counties will be funded on a cluster (2 - 4 counties) or mini-region basis.
