Fibromyalgia, a specific form of arthritis, affects 5 million adults in the US
Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread pain, multiple tender points, abnormal pain processing, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and often psychological distress. People with fibromyalgia may also have other symptoms, such as:
- Morning stiffness
- tingling or numbness in hands and feet
- headaches, including migraines
- irritable bowel symptoms
- problems with thinking and memory
- painful menstrual periods and other pain syndromes
There are evidence-based self-management and physical activity programs that are safe and effective for people with arthritis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides program recommendations for people with arthritis. In California, CAPP is implementing the following self-management and physical activity programs:
- Arthritis Foundation Self-Help Program (English and Spanish)
- Chronic Disease Self-Management Program
- Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
