Nonprescription Sale of Syringes

 Fact Sheets

This one-page fact sheet for pharmacists outlines current and recently-enacted law that governs the nonprescription sale of syringes in pharmacies.

This one-page brochure is designed for pharmacists to provide to their nonprescription syringe sale customers, and provides information on how to properly dispose of sharps waste. It also gives resources to help customers find referrals for drug treatment programs, HIV and viral hepatitis testing, and related medical services.

This fact sheet for health departments, policymakers, pharmacists and consumers outlines the key provisions of Assembly Bill 1743, effective January 1, 2015. The new law allows licensed pharmacies throughout California to sell an unlimited number of syringes to adults without a prescription, and allows adults to purchase and possess an unlimited number of syringes for personal use.

This document summarizes all California Health and Safety and Business and Professions Code related to nonprescription sale of syringes, syringe exchange and the possession of syringes for disease prevention purposes.
