California AIDS Clearinghouse (CAC)

Targeted Condom Distribution Program

In alignment with the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, CAC’s condom distribution program targets HIV-positive people and those people California data show to be at highest risk for acquiring HIV infection, who are:
• Partners of people living with HIV;
• Transgender individuals with an emphasis on African Americans/Blacks and Hispanics/Latinos/as;
• Gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM) with an emphasis on African Americans/Blacks  and Hispanics/Latinos;
• People who inject drugs (PWID);
• Sexual and needle-sharing partners of gay men, MSM and PWID; and
• Women at risk for HIV via their sexual partners (who are in one or more of the above-mentioned populations), injection drug use and/or sex work.

Venues that are in the California Project Area* who specifically serve one or more of these populations are eligible to participate in the program by providing free condoms to their clientele. Types of participating venues include community-based organizations, community health centers/clinics, LGBT centers, bars, dance clubs, sex clubs, bathhouses, syringe exchange programs, and local business partners.

Participating venues can also utilize CAC’s “This is a Condom Zone” sign to encourage their clients to stay safe by using condoms, if they choose to be sexually active, and to contact their local health jurisdiction or community-based organization if they need information on HIV/AIDS/ STDs, or where to get tested for HIV and/or STDs.

To participate in the program, venues can contact their local health jurisdiction’s HIV/AIDS coordinator to begin the registration process.

* The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) funding defines the California Project Area as all of California except the counties of Los Angeles, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo.  Los Angeles and San Francisco are directly funded by the CDC to provide services and San Francisco covers Marin and San Mateo counties.
