Welcome to the State of California

Application Process:

  • When submitting a Genetic Counselor application through the website at address http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/GDSP/Pages/GeneticCounselorWebpage.aspx, do all Internet browsers work when applying for the Genetic Counselor License?

    No, only Internet Explorer.
  • Once I submit my application and supporting documentation and live scan paperwork for Genetic Counselor licensure, how long does it take before I am licensed?

    One to three months.
  • How can I get a receipt for my payment?

The Genetic Disease Screening Program Accounting Department produces a receipt after processing license payment fees.  A receipt can be requested by sending an email to PSQAGroup@cdph.ca.gov.
  • Do Genetic Counselors need to have to have their license no later than 12/31/11?

Genetic Counselors are required to apply for licensure as of July 1, 2011, and all Genetic Counselors working at a Prenatal Diagnosis Center need to be licensed by December 31, 2011.
  • Which last name do I use if I am going to be getting married and will be taking on my spouse’s name?

Apply under the name you plan to use professionally as a Genetic Counselor. The Genetic Counselor Licensure Program asks about other names used and will be able to recognize previous names used for matching purposes.
  • On the Genetic Counselor License application form, a question is asked about whether the applicant is a US citizen.  Are individuals who are in the United States working under a Visa or Green Card able to be licensed?

Under California law, individuals authorized to work in the US with a H1-b or other Visa or Green Card may be licensed if they have a Social Security number.  Therefore a non-US citizen must submit a copy of their status and a copy of their Social Security card.
  • How will the public and employers verify that Genetic Counselors are licensed?

There is a listing of all licensed Genetic Counselors on our website: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/GDSP/Pages/GeneticCounselorWebpage.aspx.  You can search by last name or by county and it will include the license number and expiration date of the license.
