CONTINUING EDUCATION and EXPERIECE REQUIREMENTS

Continuing Education and Requirements for Certificate/Permit Renewal

The continuing educ= ation credits (CECs) and continuing experience required to renew permits and certificates in radiologic technology are specified in California Code of Regulation (CCR), title 17, section 30403. The California Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch (the Department) does not approve or provide continuing education credits.

An approved continu= ing education credit means one ho= ur of instruction received in subjects related to the application of X-ray to the human body and accepted for purposes of credentialing, assigning professio= nal status or certification by:

· American Registry of Radiologic Technologists<= o:p>

· Medical B= oard of California

· Osteopath= ic Medical Board of California<= /st1:place>

· California Board of Chiropractic Examiners

· Board of Podiatric Medicine

· Board of = Dental Examiners

The Department will= accept the following advanced credential certificates issued by the American Regi= stry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) for 24 CECs if the certificate was issu= ed within the two years immediately preceding the expiration date of the certificate or permit:

Bone Densitometry
Cardiovascular-interventional Radiography=
Computerized Tomography=
Mammography
Quality Management
Radiology Assistant
Radiation Therapy
Vascular-interventional Radiography.=

The Department will= credit 24 CECs to Limited Permit X-ray technicians who have enrolled in an approv= ed Radiologic Technology program and who have documented the completion of a minimum of six months coursework. <= /span>Documentation must include a letter from an authorized representative of the approved Radiologic Technology program. Additional documentation may also be required, such as official sch= ool transcripts.

Please note that &#= 8220;subjects related to the application of X-ray to the human body” may include X= -ray administration, X-ray management, X-ray pathology, X-ray diagnosis and X-r= ay quality control. However, su= bjects in MRI, Ultrasound, CPR, or other topics not related to the application of X-rays to the human body cannot be accepted. It is the responsibility of the certificate or permit holder to ascertain the acceptability of courses. =

Required number of approved CECs=

In the two years im= mediately preceding the expiration date of the certificate or permit:

Certified Radiologic Technologists and Li= mited Permit X-ray Technicians are required to earn 24 approved CECs to ren= ew a certificate or permit.
Certified Radiologic Technologists posses= sing a current Mammographic Radiologic Technology Certificate, are required = to earn at least 10 of those 24 approved CECs in mammography and to perf= orm at least 200 mammographic examinations.

Note about Requalification. Mammographic Radiologic Technolog= ists who fail to meet the continui= ng experience requirements will = need to perform a minimum of 25 mammography examinations under the direct supervis= ion of a qualified mammographic radiologic technologist and then perform an additional 175 mammography examinations under indirect supervision of a qualified mammographic radiologic technologist, before being considered eligible for resuming the performance of unsupervised mammography screenin= g or diagnostic examinations.

● Licentiates of the he= aling arts (physicians and surgeons, osteopathic Physicians and surgeons, podiat= rists and chiropractors) are required to earn 10 approved CECs to renew a certif= icate or permit.

The renewal form mailed to you will include space for documenting the approved CECs you have earned. = You may use the reverse side of the renewal form, if needed. You= are required to maintain original certificates or other documentation for five= (5) years so that they can be made available to this Department upon request.

The 17 CCR 30406 requires that any individual issued an X-ray certificate or p= ermit must report to the Department= any change in their name or maili= ng address within 30 calendar days of the change. The Re= port of Name or Address Change (CDPH 8391) is available at the RHB website: http://= www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/radquip/Pages/default.aspx.<= /p>

Complete the form and either mail = or fax the form to the Department.

Continuing Education and Experience Records Re= tention Requirements

Each individual cer= tified or permitted pursuant to the Radiologic Technology Act shall maintain the doc= ument(s) that evidence the individual having e= arned approved continuing education credits and/or completing mammographic examinations for five years following the dates the credits were earned an= d/or the mammographic examinations were completed. Such document(s) shall be made available to the Department upon request.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE CERTIFICATION

The CECs and contin= uing experience required to renew certificates in nuclear medicine are specified in the title 17, California Code of Regulations (17CCR), section 30536. Nuclear Medicine Certificates expire five years from= the date of issuance.

The 17 CCR 30536(c)= (1), states, “Documentation submitted with the application establishes that the applicant has particip= ated in management-sponsored or fo= rmal continuing education or training offered by one or more of the following:<= o:p>

(A) Professional organizations or societies.

(B) Institutions of= higher learning.

(C) The applicant&#= 8217;s education and training includes at least five (5) clock hours since the la= st certificate renewal or initial application in each of the scopes specified= in 17 CCR 30533 for which the certificate was issued.

Nuclear medicine categories pursuant to 17 CCR 30533(= a) states, “Certificates shall be issued for one or more of the followi= ng:

(1) Diagnostic in vivo and in vitro t= ests involving measurement of uptake, dilution, or excretion, including venipuncture, but not involving imaging.

(2) Diagnostic nuclear medicine techn= ology procedures involving imaging, including venipuncture.

(3) Use of generators and reagent kit= s for preparation of radioactive material.

(4) Internal radioactive material therapy.”

CECs from the Radiopharmacy Scope may be appli= ed to either: Non-Imaging (in-vivo/in-vitro) or Generators a= nd Kits, depending upon the topic.
