Dr. Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), today announced the recall of spice products now includes pepper and curry sold under the “Natural and Delicious” label by CJ United Corporation. The company is based in Oakland.

CJ United Corporation received product from Union International Food Company, located in Union City. Union International Food Company has recalled all of its products produced in Union City because of potential contaminated with Salmonella.

Recalled Union International Food Company spices have been associated with an outbreak of Salmonella that has sickened 60 people in four states, including 45 in California. No deaths have been reported. The illnesses among California residents have occurred in 18 counties in Central and Northern California, and the latest onset of illness has been April 2, 2009.

CJ United Corporation has voluntarily recalled the following products:

Product Name                              Brand              Package Size       Package Description
U.S. White Pepper (powder)   Natural & Delicious     5 pound                Clear Plastic Jug
Black Pepper (powder)           Natural & Delicious     5 pound                Clear Plastic Jug
Curry Powder                        Natural & Delicious     5 pound                Clear Plastic Jug

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly individuals and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (occasionally bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses. Consumers should consult with their physicians if they have these symptoms.

The CDPH Web site will be updated with additional information as it becomes available.
