Immunization Recommendations and Screening Requirements for California Colleges & Universities with Student Housing
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) created updated immunization recommendations for California colleges and universities with campus housing. Students who attend schools with campus housing may be at higher risk for vaccine-preventable diseases. Requiring immunizations at your campus can help keep your students and staff safe and protected from certain diseases. Increased immunization rates on campus can:
Keep staff and students focused on their academics
Avoid requiring additional staff time during a disease-related outbreak
Reduce medical costs to our California institutions and student
The combination of weakening protection from diseases and crowded campus housing living situations can place college students at risk of getting or spreading a disease. In recent years, the number of deaths related to cases of vaccine-preventable diseases and outbreaks on college campuses has increased. The costs related to investigating each case and outbreak is significant and can be a huge burden for universities, public health departments, and health care systems.
To help protect students and staff, CDPH urges all California colleges and universities with campus housing to implement these recommendations at their campus.
