2008 Immunization Assessment Results
The primary purpose of the annual assessment local health department clinics and community health centers is to provide local immunization staff with data to measure the immunization status of two-year-old children served by the clinics and also provide feedback on methods to improve their immunization practices. In addition, the assessments assist in determining local and statewide progress toward state and national immunization objectives.
The immunization clinic assessments are conducted using the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Comprehensive Clinic Assessment Software Application (CoCASA) Version 4.0 and the clinic Quality Assurance Review (QAR) questionnaire. The record-based standard assessment using CoCASA and the QAR are both part of the Assessment, Feedback, Incentives and eXchange (AFIX) strategy for improving immunization coverage. Immunization record data are entered into CoCASA to assess clinic vaccination coverage levels.
Selecting Clinics for Assessment
Local Health Department Clinics
All health department clinics (including satellite clinics) that offer immunization services at least twice a month are required to undergo a standard assessment with CoCASA and QAR regardless of patient population and coverage level from 2008 assessments. This is a change from previous years when clinics could be exempt from conducting a QAR and CoCASA assessment based on criteria of exceeding 80% coverage level for the 4:3:1:3:3:1 series and the patient population being less than 30 patients.
Community Health Center Clinics (CHC)
All CHCs receiving immunization subvention contract funds from the local health department/state, regardless of size or immunization coverage levels from prior years, are required to have an assessment using CoCASA and QAR performed.
