Center for Health Statistics
The Center for Health Statistics (CHS) is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the collection, management, and dissemination of public health and vital statistics data in conjunction with other State agencies, local government agencies, and other customers. The CHS is also responsible for providing technical assistance relating to vital statistics data to users within CDPH and external to CDPH (local government, academia, researchers, the general public, etc.), and to actively promote and disseminate information relevant to the health of the public and to aid decision makers in setting policies, managing problems and identifying emerging health trends. The CHS is composed of the Office of Vital Records (OVR), the Office of Health Information and Research (OHIR), the Administration Support Section, and the Information Technology Services Section (ITSS).
- Office of Vital Records (OVR):
Charged with the responsibility of maintaining a uniform system for registration and a permanent central registry with a comprehensive and continuous index for all birth, death, fetal death, marriage and dissolution certificates registered for vital events which occur in California (1+ million events annually).
- Office of Health Information and Research (OHIR):
Responsible for coordinating the development of health information systems and conducting research relating to the health status of California's population. OHIR is composed of the Vital Statistics Section and the Planning and Data Analysis Section.
