The California Birth Defect Monitoring Registry is a system for recording and tracking birth malformations in selected counties. It is a core function of CBDMP and serves as a substrate to conduct population based surveillance and research for risk prevention factors associated with birth defects. The Registry currently monitors a representative subset of California counties. These counties represent 40% of the state’s births and are representative of the state’s geographic, environmental and racial/ethnic diversity.
Birth defects included in the CBDMP Registry consist of structural malformations generally encompassed within the ICD-9 codes 740-759.9. Live births, stillbirths occurring after 20 weeks gestation, and medically indicated terminations are included in the registry.
