Surveillance, Research & Evaluation Branch

The Surveillance, Research & Evaluation Branch conducts a variety of epidemiologic studies, evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of publicly funded HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs, and maintains California’s HIV/AIDS Case Registry.  The Branch is composed of four sections:

  • The Surveillance Section maintains a confidential, central registry of demographic and clinical information on all reported California HIV infections and AIDS cases. Primary activities include monitoring the number of HIV diagnoses each year, monitoring behaviors related to HIV testing, risk for infection and access to care, monitoring changes in transmission, and providing data to guide local resources.
  • The Research Section builds and analyzes public health data sets with a focus on surveillance data to profile the HIV epidemic in California and thus inform HIV prevention programs, care programs, and public policymakers in the state and nationally.  To support this objective, the Research Section coordinates primary data collection for supplemental surveillance projects (behavioral, clinical, and incidence surveillance).  The Research Section cleans, analyzes, and summarizes data from supplemental surveillance as well as routine case surveillance in context with other relevant data sources, builds models for estimation of key epidemic parameters, and interprets data to determine the implications to program and policy.
  • The Program Evaluation and Research Section collects HIV/AIDS data to evaluate the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of California HIV/AIDS care service delivery programs funded through the HIV Care Branch, and provides research and evaluation support for programs and services of the HIV Prevention Branch.
  • The Data Systems Support Section provides technical resources for the ongoing development, integration, and security of technology to support the continued success of OA’s business functions and mission.
