HIV/AIDS Reporting Overview Process

Step 1: A healthcare provider or HIV counseling and testing (C&T) site submits a specimen to a laboratory.

Step 2: The laboratory returns a positive result to the healthcare provider or C&T site.

Step 3: Both the laboratory and the provider or C&T site report the case to the local health department HIV surveillance staff.

Step 4: The local health department submits unduplicated HIV/AIDS cases to CDPH/OA.

Step 5: OA submits HIV/AIDS case data to the CDC after identifying information has been removed.
