Welcome to the State of California

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) Surveillance

As of May 1, 2011, California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has suspended the surveillance for GBS cases.  Please continue to submit all GBS cases with a hospital admission date on or before May 1, 2011. CDPH will continue investigating these cases.  To report a case, please contact the CDPH GBS Project at GBSReport@cdph.ca.gov.

Thank you for participating in the California Guillain-Barré Syndrome Surveillance Project. Your participation in this project has been critical for the post-licensure safety monitoring of the 2010-2011 seasonal influenza vaccine.

GBS Surveillance Project Description

As part of post-licensure vaccine safety monitoring for the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza vaccine, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LA DPH) and the California Emerging Infections Program (EIP) conducted a statewide surveillance for Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in the 2009-2010 and the 2010-2011 influenza seasons.

The different components of the CDPH GBS surveillance system included:

  1. Reports from neurologists of GBS cases
  2. GBS ICD-9 code queries at acute care hospitals
  3. Enhanced testing for possible infectious disease triggers of GBS, statewide

For any questions regarding this project, please contact GBSReport@cdph.ca.gov.
