California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program
California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program Fact Sheet
MO-07-0003 CDAPP
Goals
Improve pregnancy outcomes for high-risk pregnant women who have diabetes or who develop diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes)
Reduce fetal deaths and neonatal and maternal complications due to diabetes.
Problems
Diabetes is a complication for 3-14 percent of women during pregnancy.
Pregnant women with diabetes are at high risk for maternal complications and their infants are at risk for congenital malformations or stillbirth.
Appropriate prenatal care and diabetes control can reduce or prevent these problems for pregnant women and their infants.
Program Activities
California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program (CDAPP) consultants develop, update and disseminate Sweet Success: Guidelines for Care which provides standards of practice for diabetes and pregnancy.
CDAPP consultants recruit, educate, consult and provide technical assistance to Sweet Success Affiliates who provide clinical care to pregnant women with diabetes. Clinical care includes comprehensive individualized services such as outpatient health education, nutrition, psychosocial and medical services to pre-pregnant and pregnant women with diabetes.
Develop professional and patient education services, materials and resources including The Guidelines for Care, which are ethnic/language specific materials for high-risk populations and the web site.
Develop appropriate cultural and ethnic services for the diverse California Population to promote awareness of the importance of preconception care for women with pre-existing diabetes.
Collaborate with the Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program, (CPSP), the California Diabetes Program (CDP) and other appropriate networks.
