California Public Health Capacity to Receive Electronic Syndromic Surveillance Data

This map provides a visual representation of California public health agencies' capacity to receive electronic syndromic surveillance from provider and hospital Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems* pursuant to the standards and certification criteria set by the Office of National Coordinator** (ONC) and Meaningful Use objectives and measures set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services EHR Incentive Program.***

*The definition of EHR is an electronic record of health-related information on an individual that conforms to nationally recognized interoperability standards and that can be created, managed, and consulted by authorized clinicians and staff across more than one health care organization (HHS Office of National Coordinator April 2008 (PDF).

**ONC specifies that EHR systems submitting electronic syndromic surveillance data must be certified using either messaging standard HL7 2.3.1 or HL7 2.5.1.
