Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation Program (FACE) 

Background

The California Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) is a program in the Occupational Health Branch designed to identify and study fatal occupational injuries.  The California FACE program is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and was started in 1991.  California is one of nine funded FACE states, but is the only one that focuses its efforts on a single county - Los Angeles County.  On average, approximately one worker dies every three days in LA County.

Purpose

The purpose of the FACE Program is to identify conditions that lead to fatal injuries at work.  By studying these conditions we can develop more effective ways for employers and employees to prevent fatal injuries in the future.

FACE Program Activities

• Track all fatal occupational injuries in LA County.
• Investigate select incidents to determine causes and risk factors associated with fatal events.
• Make recommendations for prevention through engineering controls and safer work practices.
• Distribute reports to employees, employers, relevant agencies and organizations, and occupational safety and health professionals.
